From Mythology to iGaming
Hey there! I’m Erik Wilson, but in the iGaming world, you might know me as Scandy Checker. My fascination with Scandinavian mythology began in childhood, but visiting the Lofotr Viking Museum turned it into a true passion for Viking strategy and precision.
At university, my friends nicknamed me Jarl—not just because I played slots but because I analysed them, calculated betting efficiency, and predicted their potential before spinning. They joked that I wasn’t just playing; I was commanding the slots. And that’s how Scandy Checker was born.
From Software Engineering to Slot Mastery
My iGaming journey started in 2012 when I completed my A-Levels at Concord College. I then went on to study Software Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, taking GameDev courses on the side.
After earning my MSc in 2017, I took the iGaming Academy’s Slot Games course—one of the best decisions I’ve made. That’s where I mastered slot mechanics, reel design, paytables, and how to calculate slot efficiency.
At first, I relied on intuition to evaluate slots. But with training and experience, I learned to see through the games—understanding exactly how they work mathematically.
Industry Highlights
In 2018, I published my first iGaming articles, marking the start of my deeper industry involvement. That same year, Blueprint Gaming invited me as an independent slot tester for Vikings Unleashed, opening new doors to expert talks at SiGMA Europe and Affiliate World. I’ve also hosted master classes at Totally Gaming Academy.
Scandinavian-themed slots remain my specialty. Over the years, I’ve analyzed over 230 Viking slots, separating the true gems from flashy designs with no real depth.
A Few Fun Facts
Growing up, weekends meant gathering around as my dad—a naval architect at BAE Systems—told us stories of fearless warriors braving the seas. His tales, mixed with engineering and seafaring challenges, shaped my love for strategy and precision.
Beyond history and mythology, I’m drawn to math and physics. In my free time, I love dissecting complex mechanisms, playing strategy games, or exploring algorithms. Like the Vikings, I have a passion for travel—always eager to discover new places and experiences.
